Learning to Drive: 1 [2] [3] [4] [5]

Learning to Drive can sometimes be a daunting task, even for the more experienced learner. But here at MSM we have made it easy for you to learn to drive as quickly and as safely as possible, with a minimum of fuss and stress. Our lessons are planned and structured around your ability so that you will receive the maximum benefit from each driving lesson.

Read on to find out what you can expect to encounter during your driver training course.

Introduction and Cockpit Drill
The first lesson will usually consist of an explanation of the car controls (the accelerator, brake and clutch etc) and what you are expected to do when you first get in the car before you drive off. You will be taught about the “Biting Point” and how to find it and you will also be taught how to drive for very short distances. This is normally referred to as “Moving off and Stopping” Don’t Worry. You will be given as much assistance as necessary without being over-assisted.

You will also cover the use of other ancillary controls including use of signals, how to hold the steering wheel and how to steer using the “Pull-Push” method.

If you have driven before, the first lesson will be used to assess your driving ability after which, your instructor will discuss with you and advise you as to the best course of action to follow.

Junctions Turn Left / Follow the Road Ahead / Turn Right
You will further enhance your “Moving off and Stopping” routine and also be introduced by a file presentation to the different types of junctions in the UK. You will learn what and where the blind spots are and how to deal with them. You will also learn about “Give Way” lines which will arm you with the knowledge of when and where Priority must be given on the roads.

After the initial introduction, you will be taught how to drive safely on the roads turning left, following the road ahead, and turning right using T-junctions and Crossroads.

Roundabouts Turn Left / Follow the Road Ahead / Turn Right
You will be taught how to negotiate roundabouts and how to apply the “Give Way to the Right” rule. You will also be shown how to approach them correctly and in which lane depending on the intended direction of travel, and how to decide if it is necessary to stop. You will also be taught the correct exit procedure.

General Drive
By now you should be driving quite well and now you will go for a general drive. This is usually up the coast road to Sunderland. You will be dealing with all of the junctions that you have practiced on in your previous lessons.

Pedestrian Crossings.
You will learn about the different types of pedestrian crossings that you will encounter during your driving career. You will be taught how to approach them correctly, and also how to identify when and where you may have to stop.
