Hill Starts / U Turn / Turn in the Road (3 Point Turn)
You will be taught how to stop rolling back when driving off on a hill. You will be shown how to properly co-ordinate use of the accelerator, clutch, and handbrake.
You will also be taught how to make a “U-Turn” and how to also “Turn the car Around in the Road.” This is commonly referred to as a “3 point turn”
Straight Line Reverse / Left / Right Corner Reverse
You will be taught how to reverse into a side road on the left/right. Your instructor will explain to you why this manoeuvre will be useful in everyday driving and also, how to keep an eye out for vulnerable pedestrians and other road users throughout the manoeuvre.
Reverse into a Parking Bay on the Left / Right
Your instructor will teach you how to reverse into a parking bay and also explain why it is better to reverse into a bay than to drive forwards into it. You will also be shown how to correct the manoeuvre if you are unable to enter the bay correctly first time.
Reverse Park behind a car / between two cars. (Parallel Park)
This manoeuvre is very useful in everyday driving and you will probably find yourself using it a lot when you are driving independently. Your instructor will explain to you why you will not be able to enter the same parking space by driving forwards into it, whereas if you reverse into it, you can. At first, you will park behind one car and when you become more proficient at the manoeuvre, you will practise parking in-between two cars.
Emergency Stop
You will be taught how to correctly and safely bring the car to a halt from speeds of up to 30mph. Your instructor will explain to you how to avoid emergencies in the first place, but if they do happen, you will know how to deal with them effectively.
