Learning to Drive: [1] [2] 3 [4] [5]

Dual Carriageways
A lot of people look forward to this lesson. Why? Because you are driving at speeds of up to 70mph and you will also be using gear 5 for the first time. You will learn about what the slip roads are and you will be taught how to join and leave a dual carriageway using them. Your instructor will explain to you how to overtake vehicles safely, and also, how to keep a safe distance from the car in front using the “2 Second Rule”

Slip Roads

You will practise how to join and leave a dual carriageway using the slip roads. You will repeat the joining and leaving procedure many times during the course of this lesson in order to become more proficient at it. You will also learn why it is important to build up your speed on the slip road to match the traffic on the dual carriageway.

Test Routes

Towards the end of your Learning to Drive career, you will be driving on what are referred to as Test Routes. You will have driven on test routes during your driving lessons, but now you will be driving on them in the same specific order the Driving Examiner may take you on. You will cover any tricky parts that you may encounter so that you should be well prepared for the Driving Test. (Please note. It is not possible to cover every single test route but you will be practising on the hardest ones. The easier routes should not pose any problems. Hopefully!)

Mock Driving Test
Your Driving Instructor will assess your driving performance by way of a mock test. You will start the Mock Test from the Driving Test Centre where possible and you will be tested in exactly the same way as you would be on a real driving test. Your instructor will play the role of an Examiner (including wearing the uniform) and you will be taken on an actual test route. The Mock Test will last approximately 40 minutes (the same time as your real Driving Test) and you will be told the result at the end. If there are any deficiencies, your instructor will discuss them with you and explain to you how to rectify your mistakes. You will also drive back to the places where you made the mistakes and your instructor will show you what should have been done as opposed to what was done. You will have at least two mock tests where possible. They are excellent for assessing a customer’s performance and give a very accurate and unbiased opinion as to the customers test readiness.

The Driving Test.
This is it. The Real Thing. This is what you have been preparing for the last few weeks / months. Good Luck!

Please note. The subjects that you have read about are not exhaustive. The reason being, many main subjects have a lot of mini subjects hidden within them. They have not been explained in this Learning to Drive section. A full explanation will be given on your driving lessons.
